About

True Smith (she/they) is a holistic theatre artist rooted in community and activism in Denver. As a director, playwright, producer, and educator, True brings a distinct perspective to the stage. Her work focuses on creating safe, collaborative artistic spaces. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, True draws on her rich inner world as an autistic individual, blending cultural heritage and innovative practices to create unique productions. True is committed to using consent-forward, trauma-informed artistry alongside specialized techniques involving somatics, breath work, and mindfulness.

After relocating to Colorado to pursue her education, True completed the directing curriculum at the University of Northern Colorado, where she co-founded Directors Inspiring Riveting Theatre (D.I.R.T), the most prolific producing student group on campus to this date. Her dedication to pushing the boundaries of theatre and to addressing relevant, yet often uncomfortable, topics has led her to direct contemporary, timely shows with an experimental element such as Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. By Alice Birch, Lungs by Duncan Macmillan, Plano by Will Arbery, and Avocado by V Ensler. Along with new work developments such as Felltounge by Jo Steele and Clara's Little Questions by Helen R. Murray and TYA productions Novio Boy by Gary Soto and ¡Lotería: Game On! by Mabelle Reynoso.

True's passion is directing thought-provoking and relevant productions that serve a larger purpose: the community. Following a summer internship with Diversity in the Arts in Denver, as a Su Teatro Summer Programs Intern, True joined Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center as a full-time staff member. They are a Programs Assosiate, and a Teaching Artist, where she is grateful to fully immerse herself in professional theatre and the local community.

True is also the Founder and Co-Producer of The Moot Point Project, an independent Denver theatre project that challenges reality by evoking emotional catharsis and demonstrating that the limits of traditional theatre are moot for emerging local artists. Through experimental and unconventional productions, The Moot Point Trio (True Smith, Megan Dille, and Sarah Ausloos) develops new work, support emerging and student artists, and builds community through free or affordable events.

In addition to True’s position, directing and intimacy coordination, their goal is to be a multifaceted creative force with her plays and poetry. Her plays Horse On Fire PlayVoicemails From Another Home, and Step 6. Consider How the Harm has Healed has premiered at the University of Northern Colorado as a part of the Directors Inspiring Riveting Theatre New Play Festival. Dichotomize Me! performed at the 6th Annual Denver Fringe Festival.

True's approach is inventive and grounded, driven by a desire for a genuine connection. Her work is not just about the end product but about the audience, aiming to cultivate connections, understanding of others, and, ultimately, change the world for the better by empowering others through theatre arts.

" The dedication True has for their craft the and too her actors is so refreshing. The fine details that she takes the time and care to include is something that truly makes them an amazing director. I have loved working with True! "

-Feliz Martinez, Plano/Felltongue/Revolt
